Holy Saturday in Sulmona

On the day of Holy Saturday, preceding the Easter manifestations, on the streets of Sulmona any loud ceremonies do not take place; instead, the ritual unfolds in spiritual places in a sacred and meditative form that stands for the right preamble to lively and spectacular events of the following day.

At 9 o’clock in the evening, a silent procession, headed by the brothers of St Mary church dressed all in black, carries the statue of Madonna from St Mary della Tomba church to St Filippo Neri church, where the wake takes place.

At midnight, in St Mary della Tomba church, in a mystic and solemn atmosphere, the statue of the Christ takes its place up beyond the altar in order to testify the Resurrection.
